East Dunbartonshire chefs aim to give region a healthy boost
Darren Tait and his partner Katie Wilson have worked as chefs for over 20 years but dreamt of opening a kitchen dishing up healthy yet affordable food to help busy people live a healthier lifestyle.
The couple’s range of meals are an alternative to highly processed ready meals available in the supermarket and are compatible with mainstream slimming diets and fitness programmes.
With support from Business Gateway, Katie’s Real Food Kitchen, located on Lammermoor Road, Kirkintilloch, is now selling to customers of all ages, as well as teaming up with a local gym offering prep meals.
Katie said: “We’re a small business offering freshly made meals served chilled ready to re-heat at home or be frozen for later. We also have a deli bar for healthy lunches and since opening we have been very busy with sales higher than we predicted. We have three young children so we understand the challenges of family life and the issues that can occur when trying to ensure everyone eats well. We aim to raise awareness of healthy eating across the region and hope to work with local primary schools to raise awareness of the benefits of this.
“Business Gateway were a great source of support, especially with it came to putting together a strategy and plan for future. Our adviser also put us in contact with a specialist who carried out all our marketing strategy which was an essential to our brand identity and getting our name out there.”
With customers ranging from professionals, families and older people keeping an eye on cholesterol, Darren and Katie are delighted with how the business is going so far.
Darren added: “As well as joining forces with the gym, we’re also in the process of setting up a community group and are in touch with a local food bank to see if our expertise can be used in the fight against food poverty. Our overall vision is to be at the centre of healthy eating in the region, teaching, sharing and helping others to realise that having a cleaner lifestyle can be affordable if done properly.”
Suzanne Bruce of Business Gateway East Dunbartonshire said: “Darren and Katie have received a variety of support, including guidance on the strategic direction of the business, funding advice and recommendations on branding to help launch their business. This support has allowed Katie’s Real Food Kitchen to not only launch successfully but have a long-term plan in place.”
